As Europe’s leading teams battle it out for a place at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the UK’s elite junior players will descend upon Loughborough for the chance to take home the prestigious title.
The 2016 School Games forms one of the highlights of the UK’s junior wheelchair basketball calendar, truly demonstrating the transformation and impact the sport continues to have since its inception as a rehabilitation and recreational activity for spinal cord injured patients in the late 1940s.
Now one of the leading blue-ribbon Paralympic sports and played competitively world-wide, its classification systems sees wheelchair basketball embrace a range of disabilities whilst also welcoming non-disabled players in domestic competitions; the UK’s wheelchair basketball community continues to grow both on and off the court.
Did you know…?
- Over 140 teams are playing wheelchair basketball in the UK.
- You can fit two full size basketballs side-by-side in a basketball ring.
- Wheelchair basketball is played with exactly the same size court and the same height hoops as running basketball.
How it Works
British Wheelchair Basketball will host at this event 6 teams, three from England (North, Central and South) and the three home nations who will compete in two pools.
Opening the tournament in two pools, the top two teams from each group will progress through to the semi finals; the winners then taking centre stage in an unmissable final.
