Quick Fire

Originating as a way of settling disputes, fencing has its roots in ancient sword fighting.

There are three different types of weapons in fencing; the épée, a sword similar to the duels of the 19th century; the foil, a thin flexible blade; and the sabre, whose technique emphasises speed and feints. Each weapon has its own associated scoring zone on the opponents body and is played to a unique set of rules.

Why should you watch this

Many techniques of fencing are used for stunts and fight scenes in films, therefore fencing requires athletes to be quick and nimble.

Fencing is often considered a “physical chess” with mental skills being as crucial as physical ones, with concentration and quick thinking especially important.

Everyone can take part in fencing, from young to old, and with wheelchair fencing allowing athletes with a disability to take part, it truly is a sport for all.

  • James DavisJames HoneyboneCorinna Lawrenceand Sophie Williams, who all represented Team GB at London 2012, have all experienced previous success in the  School Games.
  • Piers Gilliver, who took part in the inaugural Wheelchair Fencing UK School Games event in 2011, became World number 1 in Men’s Category A Epee in 2015.
  • James Davis, was UK School Games Men’s Foil champion in 2008 and went on to become a multiple World Cup winner, and was an integral part of the Men’s Foil team who successfully qualified for Rio 2016.

How it Works

There are four fencers allowed per event so each home country will select 24 fencers. These must be the same fencers for the individual and team events.

Selection for the first two places will be done from the U20 ranking list as of 1st April 2015 (providing these two fencers are in the top 75% of the list). Selection for the 3rd & 4th place will be made by selectors in each home country. Where fencers have not been selected for the first two places from the U20 ranking list by default, these two places will also be allocated by the selectors.

The selectors reserve the right to omit a fencer from selection if they deem that fencer’s disciplinary record to be unsatisfactory.

There will be four competing teams that will represent England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
